Interview with Gus Kemp
Strings…you seem to have a little obsession with them. Is this an extension of your guitar playing?
Yes, I’m obsessed. I really like negative space as sculptural volume. I like the relationship of point to line and line to plane and plane to volume. This one’s all about using lines to create a volume. I’m not much of a guitar player, but musicality informs my design process. I like sculptures and installations that are alive in a sense, that might be used or touched or affected by the wind or water or whatever. My worst nightmare is sculpture inside a glass box.
What kind of music would you installation be?
Music from outer space.
What’s your holy trinity of inspiration?
Walking is the best inspiration of all; rhythm and observation. Music. Getting away from your everyday things and into the country. So, I suppose inspiration for me is about finding another mind state.
